Play Dough

An equal mix of flour and salt with a little water makes a good modeling compound for children; it will not hold fine detail, but it can be dried in a warm oven and painted. Mix dry powdered clay with glycerin (harmless if eaten) for a clay that will not dry out. Food coloring can be added to the glycerin. A little petroleum jelly can be worked in for a softer clay. A play dough that is nearly the same as the commercial product can be made by mixing 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup salt, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. vegetable oil, 4 tsp. cream of tartar (for preservation), and food coloring; cook for 3 min. over medium heat.
